NOTES: Brew House Efficiency

It is starting to become obvious that my OG calculations have bee off the mark. My brew days consistently yields low OGs, and despite my best efforts, I cannot seem to rectify the issue. This problem was glowingly obvious after missing the The Full Mountie OG by .015, thereby changing the to-be Imperial Brown Ale, into a Imperial Brown Ale.

After a bit of reflection, I realized that I rarely meet my OG target. I have come close on many occasions, but only when brewing low-OG recipes. With higher OG targets, I continue to fall short.

As a result, I have hit the books, scribbled on chalkboards, and calculated my mash efficiencies for my most recent trio of brews. Each session, to my surprise, yielded the same efficiency; 55%. I'll be the first to admit that this is freaking horrendous, but it is the unfortunate reality. Most homebrewers target 70%-80%, so 55% is a pretty sad value. However, it is very important to note that at least I am consistent.

However, this information is very valuable, and since I repeatedly hit the same efficiency I can plan my recipes around it. By simply boosting the volume of grains used, I will be able to achieve my target.

I have created a page designated solely to mash efficiency. It will help you calculate your mash efficiency, and create recipes accordingly.
